Cement Block - Sometimes called landscaping blocks, these can never be more than what they are. These can be placed anywhere including on top of native peastone as a base.

Brick - It takes 4.5 bricks to fill a square foot. Bricks are about $.60 ea. on the Vineyard.

Slate - Sometimes you'll see these set on top of grass. Sometimes they'll be placed as walking spots with a native peastone walk as a base.

Bluestone - Expensive and nice. Use 2 inch slabs if set on a dirt/sand base, 1 inch slabs if set in mortar.

Edging - The considerations are the same as for driveways - and are even more critical since most patios and walkways will at some point border grass.

Your typical choices on MV

  • Wood - 1" x 4" pressure treated wood. This can be bent to accommodate gentle curves. But it will not hold up under the weight of an automobile.
  • Wood - Landscape timbers (always pressure treated)
  • Steel - Two grades are often used and each is a fraction of an inch thick and 4 - 5 inches wide. Gentle curves can be accommodated. Materials cost is approximately $5.00/ft.
  • Granite Blocks - Should be set in mortar to prevent the inevitable movement from frost. Is by far the most expensive type of edging.
