Seasons on Martha's Vineyard
a Vineyard sunset

Winters on the Vineyard are quite mild relative to New England and are similar to Virginia. Wind off the water can feel bitter and cold, but single digit temperatures are uncommon.

Springs are much cooler than the rest of New England due to all that cold water surrounding us. May can be glorious, but in April, we are envious at 65 degree temperatures a hundred miles north and, or west of us while we are shivering at 40 degrees with 25 mph winds.

Summer here is more like Nova Scotia 90 degrees is very rare and is a major reason why the Vineyard is one of the best places on Earth to grow roses.

Fall is warm due to that ocean around us that takes a long time to cool down and autumn here can be glorious with the first of the killing frosts generally not occurring until sometime well into November.

Grass mowing on the Vineyard generally starts in the 3rd and 4th weeks of April for properties protected from cool spring winds off the water and can be as late as the second week of May for non-fertilized lawns in more exposed locations. In the fall the latter type properties generally need a last mow sometime in October and the former will get their last mowing as late as Thanksgiving week or early December.
