New Lawn Options

Seed, Hydroseed, or Sod?

Preparation - which ever method you chose for having grass, preparing the soil is critical and is the most work:

Loosen the soil to a minimum depth of 5 inches;
Apply starter fertilizer;
Roll the area;
Loosen the top 1/4 inch with a rake in order to make small ridges in the soil;

Now chose your new type of grass:

Seed - Apply seed with a spreader, then roll everything, and finally cover the area with a very fine coating of peat moss. And keep the seed constantly moist but not wet for 10 days. With warm temperatures germination will begin to occur by day 6.

Key Benefits - Has a product cost of under $.02/ft. Customer has most flexibility of seed varieties for type of grass desired as well as for suitability for sunny and shady locations.

Major Disadvantages - Major watering requirement for first 10 days. Is very susceptible to run-off and puddeing in heavy rain storms.

Hydroseed - Hydroseed spray is applied by commercial companies. The spray is a combination of water, grass seed, fertilizer, and ground pieces of newspaper and wood pulp. These latter two retain moisture and sometimes obviate the need for watering.

Key Benefits - A "possible" need not to have to water. Cost depends on location in the country but on Martha's Vineyard is about $.10/ft.

Major Disadvantages - Does not work as advertised in warm, dry temperatures much above 75 degrees. Still requires manual fertilization and some amount of pre-seeding since the mixtures tend to skimp on these critical items. Is not practical for small areas.

Sod - Sod comes in 9 sq. ft. strips of 18 in. by 6 ft.

Key Benefits - An instant lawn

Major Disadvantages - Cost is in the order of $.50/ft. excluding delivery of the product to the site. Nil customer choice of grass types.

NOTE: If you hire someone to install a new lawn, 80% or more of the cost will be preparation. In many cases the benefit of sod vs. the disadvantages of the other alternatives will make a lot of sense.
