Lawn Fertilization When I am asked about fertilization, the answer is always, "What kind of a lawn do you want"? If you want your grass to be greener and healthier during its growing season, feed it. If you don't care, don't fertilize. It's that simple. All Vineyard lawns are going to be green in April and May. Having been dormant for most of the previous 5 months, they've stored up a lot of nutrients and thrive in the cool, moist weather of spring on the Island. As summer comes, fertilized lawns begin to stand out. They are green and with sufficient water are lush looking. Unfertilized lawns have already begun to slow down by July 4. They've consumed their store of nutrients and are tired. With an August drought, they may even go to sleep until September/October temps. and moisture provide a final growth surge before winter. My feeding recommendation is (at least) 4 times: The above schedule is always my recommendation with the health of the grass in mind. If a customer says, "Just one time", then it should be mid-fall. If two times, the feedings should be mid fall and early spring. The early and late feedings are important for root development during cool weather and build strength and stamina. The middle feedings promote greenness. On some properties I'll add a fifth feeding (always organic) in the summer for the owner who wants the grass to be just as green as possible in July and August.
