Vineyard Driveways

(Picts of driveway types and various edging materials coming. . .)

Asphalt - One could count asphalt drives on two hands on MV.

Dirt/Sand - Very common for a long driveway through a woodsy area, but not at recommended around a home. Dirt can become mud.

Scallop Shell - Not common, but beautiful. The color is white.

Stone - Also called a gravel driveway, this is the Vineyard's dominant type of drive. Customers generally select native peastone (light brown) in a 1/2 inch size, or stone of a grayish color which is imported from the mainland.

Because so many homes on MV are only seasonally used, the requirement for asphalt for snow plowing purposes doesn't exist here. And the initial cost of a shell or stone driveway is much less than an asphalt driveway.

Driveway Edging - When a stone driveway borders a lawn, some type of edging serves to keep the stones in the drive and out of the grass. But all types of edging are considered expensive:

  • Wood - 1" x 4" pressure treated wood. This can be bent to accommodate gentle curves. But it will not hold up under the weight of an automobile.
  • Steel - Two grades are often used and each is a fraction of an inch thick and 4 - 5 inches wide. Gentle curves can be accommodated. Materials cost is approximately $5.00/ft.
  • Cobble Stones - Should be set in mortar to prevent the inevitable movement from autos or frost. Is by far the most expensive type of edging.
