Fall - For those of our customers (the majority) who will not see their Vineyard property from October until May, the focus of our fall clean-up effort is to insure that leaves and pine needles are off the lawn for the winter and that the grass is left short for its dormant months. Nice lawns and pine needles/oak leaves are anathema. These must be removed since either will leach horrible amounts of acidity into the soil. Leaves are not so destructive in beds since most plants have a much wider pH tolerance than does grass and the leaves provide a decent winter mulch to perennials.

Spring - While my off-island colleagues in the northeast do the bulk of their cleaning-up activities in the fall, ILG does most of this work in the spring for the reasons stated to the left. Here the spring clean-up focus is cleaning beds, edging them, and making sure they are visibly weed free at the commencement of the growing season. For such customers we could do both a fall bed clean-up and spring bed clean-up for a cost of X. But our method which provides super clean beds next April tends to cost 80% of X.
