Garden Bed Edging Little can do more to improve the overall neat and clean look of a property than to edge beds where they meet grass areas. |

| In addition to the aesthetic improvement, an edged bed GREATLY reduces bed weeding since the grass rhizomes are stopped dead in their tracks by the edging process. Without edging the grass will grow into the bed and whenever their is a contest, grass almost always wins out in the long term versus annuals and perennials. Grass belongs in a lawn. When it is in a garden bed, it is a weed. | |||||||||||||||||||

Procedure - You can use an edger or a spade. We much prefer a spade. Which ever you use, file or grind it to a very sharp edge. Make your edge as deep as you want, but please understand that shallower equates to easier mowing. If the front mower wheels fall into the valley created by edging, you'll scalp the lawn. Without customer input, ILG will do a 2 - 3 inch edge, but we've a handful of customers who want a 6" edge. The deeper the edge, the more difficult is mowing and trimming without scalping the lawn. |

The edge on the lawn side of the bed should be vertical. This takes a little more concentration, but the edge will look better, work better against weeds and last longer. How long will it last? - One or two edgings a year (in our climate) always suffice. If you live where grass is growing more than 8 months, 2 - 3 edgings might be required. |
