Island Lawn & Garden Lawns MV Plants

Annuals

Annuals are a one season plant which produce flowers through most of the growing season.

Annuals can be started from seed after danger of spring frosts is over and the soil is sufficiently warm to support germination - but you won't have any June, July, or with some varieties even early August blooms by giving annuals such a late start.

One alternative is to start annuals indoors, introduce them to an outside cold frame in mid spring, and plant them in the garden when the weather is warm.

More typically in the northeast, one should purchase annuals from a local nursery. The cost is about 50¢ a plant on MV. Many annuals will begin to get tired as early as August. To keep the flowers coming on any annual, you must deadhead (snip off) the old flowers.

Feeding - I have learned that a 7 to 14 day application of Miracle-Gro® does wonders for annuals and can increase their size and bloom by 1/3, but be careful of soils. Some annuals such as nasturtiums and geraniums actually do better, bloom wise, in a poor soil.

It is a rare annual that doesn't require 6 - 8 hours of sun a day. Otherwise the plant becomes taller (leggier) and thinner than it should.

Impatiens, begonias, coleus, primrose, are torenias are notable exceptions and all tolerate shade.
